The Ritual That Grounds Me (Hint: It’s Not Meditation)
It started with green tea. Back then, I didn’t know that a simple cup would turn into a ritual that’s quietly carried me through motherhood, menopause, career pivots, and everything in between. I’ve been sipping green tea for over 30 years, and for the last eight, my go-to has been a matcha latte with coconut milk (hot in the winter, iced in the summer, always frothy). But this post isn’t just about matcha — it’s about why I reach for it and how this tiny ritual has become something bigger.
Because when life is full and fast, we crave simplicity. We crave something that feels good and is good for us. And sometimes, the gateway to that feeling is just a cup of something green and grounding.
After reading this, you might feel inspired to try something new. Maybe it’s matcha, maybe it’s something else. But if you're looking for a simple way to start your day with presence, you’re in the right place.
A Ritual is More Than a Routine
We don’t just need habits — we need anchors. In the busiest seasons of my life — raising a teenager, caregiving, and building my business — my mornings felt scattered. But when I started preparing matcha every morning, it wasn’t just about the drink. It was about creating a pause that belonged to me.
The quiet whisking, the way the coconut milk froths just right, the first warm (or chilled) sip — it all became a daily reminder that I can be present before the rest of the world pulls at me.
If you’ve ever felt like your mornings get away from you, try this: create one small ritual that you don’t skip. Whether it’s matcha, stretching, or a moment of silence, that tiny pause can change the tone of your entire day.
You Don’t Need a Total Wellness Overhaul
We’ve been sold the idea that health is about doing everything right. But what if it’s actually about doing one thing consistently?
I didn’t change my entire diet, throw out my skincare, or overhaul my life. I just made one choice — to start my day with something nourishing, simple, and soothing. That single decision had ripple effects: more energy, better digestion, and (maybe most importantly) a sense of ease.
If matcha isn’t your thing, that’s okay. The takeaway? You don’t need to commit to a “new you” — just try one new thing and let it unfold.
Mindfulness Can Be Tucked into the Smallest Moments
Meditation doesn’t always happen on a cushion. Sometimes, it starts with how you pour water or make your coffee.
That’s what matcha gave me — not just a health boost, but a mindfulness practice I could stick to. My mind still races, my to-do list still grows, but when I pause to prepare matcha, I feel connected to the moment. That is mindfulness.
So, if you’ve ever felt like meditation is too hard or time-consuming, let this be your reminder: mindfulness can live in your mug. Start there.
Start Small, Stay Grounded
The world tells us to go big or go home. But what if the real shift happens in the small things? A whisk. A mug. A breath.
Matcha became my daily anchor — not because it was trendy, but because it helped me pause. And from that pause, everything changed: how I approached my day, related to my body, and even spoke to myself.
You don’t have to overhaul your life to feel more present. You just have to start small — one moment, one breath, one sip at a time.
If you’re craving a simple way to reset — something that feels good and does good — I’d love to share one of my favorite practices with you.
